Located in the New York City metropolitan area, New Jersey City University is recognized for its urban mission as well as its model undergraduate curriculum that combines cooperative education with a firm foundation in liberal arts. A culturally diverse institution serving 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, NJCU offers more than thirty undergraduate degree programs, as well as graduate and teacher certification programs. All positions are contingent upon receipt of State funding.

The Assistant Director supports and reports directly to the Director of Public Safety Department. This individual will primarily assist the director of the Public Safety Department with matters relating to the everyday functions of the Department. A major focus for the Assistant Director will be the management of the Public Safety Department’s Physical Security Systems, and will perform other duties as requested by the Director of Public Safety.

Assistant Director for Security Systems

Assistant Director for Security Systems: Assist in providing direction and operational management for overall university security systems by working with administrators of schools and centers, facilities managers, external contractors and the university community members to provide progressive, coordinated electronic security and safety services. Ensure quality assurance and customer satisfaction and for benchmarking the best in class security and technology services. Maintain daily operational performance management of electronic security systems under the direction of the Director of Public Safety.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervision of Staff Assigned
  2. Special Crime Prevention projects
  3. Public speaking assignments
  4. Knowledge of NIMS and ICS
  5. Background investigations/security applicants
  6. Intermediate level writings
  7. Ability to effectively utilize and understand the various types of technological computer based software programs and information systems used by the unit or department.
  8. Ability to provide instruction and training on the various types of technological computer based software programs and information systems used by the unit or department.
  9. Ability to establish processing priorities and explains the capabilities and limitations of the various types of technological computer based software programs and information systems used by the unit, or department.
  10. Ability to maintain security of data, software, and hardware. Sets up files for maximum efficiency and updates same as necessary.
  11. Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate informative reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  12. Administration and coordination special security projects for the director of Public Safety.
  13. Liaison to external police, government, and security training agencies.
  14. Data retrieval for projects of a specific nature that will assist the director of Public Safety in coordinating special security services to better serve the University community.
  15. Serves as Department’s Campus Card Access Coordinator.
  16. Trains administrative staff assigned to his/her units to function interchangeably.
  17. Encourages personnel to submit suggestions made individually or jointly that may enhance the performance of this Department or lead to increased efficiency and economy of operations.
  18. Responsible for all computer reports generated and sent to various departments throughout the University.
  19. Represents Department on various committees.
  20. Performs other related duties as assigned by the director.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required; minimum of three years of supervisory experience required; minimum of three years of project coordination and management experience required; contract management experience required; thorough knowledge of contract services, electronic security systems including, but not limited to, CCTV and emergency phone applications, access control technology, IT applications, and systems configurations and operations required; superior communication skills including excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills required; strong decision-making skills required; demonstrated skill in dealing with business protocol at all levels of the organization; ability to solve problems and work comfortably in crisis situations required; ability to work in a fast-paced environment required; ability to be flexible and agile in meeting the demands of unexpected work or crisis required; commitment to serving the interest of the University community and the strategic goals of the division required; understanding of higher education environment preferred. A valid drivers’ license.
